Krissy and I have been through a lot of houses, cars, water bottles, chairs, and so many other things we just can't seem to get right. Another thing we have bought a lot of is beds!
When we were dating, we lived and worked at residential facilities that supplied us with our own twin beds. Once we got married, we decided we did not want to share a twin bed. I know, crazy, right?
We headed to the mattress shop and laid on about 25 percent of the beds because that was the percentage we could mostly afford. We decided on a king bed!
Let me tell you, once you go king, you will never go back!
This bed was the best bed ever!!!! We both loved it. We slept well, were comfortable, had no sore joints, and felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. We never wanted to leave it!
Well, all good things come to an end, sadly.
The bed eventually formed to our bodies, and we ended up with two body-shaped divots in our mattress. Thank goodness the bed was under warranty...right?
Not right!
They didn't make our mattress anymore, so they gave us an upgrade. The upgrade was shit! It was extremely uncomfortable, and we woke up every day sore, angry, and tired.
Let's try that warranty again!
The next mattress was slightly better but still horrible. As I said, we were newlyweds without much money, so we just had to deal with it.
Random Team Freirose information: Krissy and I switch sides of the bed regularly, about twice a year. This might be because of the temperature near the window, side-sleeping comfort, light from the hallway or bathroom in the morning, or just because we're ready for a change. Therefore, we need a bed that is comfortable on both sides for both of us.
Over the years, we started switching mattresses every few years because nothing ever matched that first bed we owned together. As we got older, the mattresses just seemed to get more uncomfortable, and we woke up with more aches and pains.
Then COVID hit in 2020, and we needed something to make being stuck at home better.
What could do that? A new bed, of course!
We put on our masks, grabbed our clean pillowcases, and headed out to try more mattresses.
We both like a firm mattress with a comfortable top, but we couldn't agree on which one to buy. So, we decided to get two different twin mattresses with a split adjustable frame.
The frame allows each side to move separately, adjusting the legs, lumbar area, and upper body all the way to a sitting position. For an extra special surprise, the bottom of the bed lights up in many different colors.
Why? I don't know.
I bought a Level One Purple mattress, and Krissy got a higher-level Purple mattress that she almost immediately exchanged for a more traditional mattress.
The results?
I love my bed. Krissy loves my bed but also likes her bed. Krissy uses the adjustable features nightly, while I only occasionally use them.
We can still switch sides but have to switch the mattresses around at the same time.
I call that a success because we haven't switched mattresses in six years!
Sleeping While Camping: A Whole Different Adventure
While we seem to have figured out sleeping at home, sleeping while camping has been another adventure.
First, I need to tell you that I LOVE my sleeping bag. And that may be an understatement. Whenever I've had to stay overnight at work, I use my sleeping bag. I just love it!
Our camping adventures started in a tent, sleeping directly on the ground. We eventually upgraded to a mat and then an inflatable mattress.
I hate blow-up mattresses! They are freezing, never stay full, and you're always bouncing your partner around. I would rather sleep on the ground.
We ended our tent camping adventures with cots, which were definitely an improvement.
Then, in 2020, we converted a van into a camper van so we could finally get off the ground. Randomly, this was the same year we bought our adjustable bed at home. Apparently, 2020 was the year of trying to sleep better!
From there, our camping beds continued to evolve.
We went from a double bed in a travel trailer to a double bed in a very old Class A RV. Then we upgraded to a queen bed in another Class A RV, and now, in Lucky, we have a king bed that has to fold in half and to sit in one of the slide-outs while we travel. Therefore, there is a crack in the bed where ones butt is.
It isn't the best bed we've ever had, but for me, it's pretty good.
Krissy, on the other hand, is not a fan.
She says she actually needs to get out of bed because if she sleeps too long, she gets sore. That's probably not the sign of a great mattress!
Finding the Right Bed for Full-Time RV Living
So, what does all of this mean?
It means we need to figure out a new bed for our future!
When we start full-time RVing, our RV bed will no longer be something we sleep in for a weekend or a short vacation. It will be our bed every single night. And after all these years of searching for a comfortable mattress, I don't want to go backward!
Right now, our plan is to get two Purple mattresses and put them together since Purple has been one of our favorites at home.
Will that work in Lucky? Will we finally find a comfortable RV bed that we both love?
I guess we'll find out! I'll keep you updated on our progress.
But there is one other very important sleeping decision I need to make.
Once we're full-time RVing, do I need to give up my beloved sleeping bag and start sleeping with regular blankets and sheets? Or can my sleeping bag become my permanent bedding?
Because, honestly, I really love my sleeping bag!
So, now I want to know: Do you have a bed you absolutely love? What side of the bed do you sleep on? And, most importantly, would it really be that weird to sleep in a sleeping bag every night?
Sweet Dreams!
Anne
